Course Overview

Underpinning the course are principles of comprehensive primary care which are embedded into teaching content and assessment. This includes cultural safety in practice in particular to addressing the needs of indigenous and multicultural Australians; a public health approach for the prevention, early detection and management of chronic diseases; evidence-based care and the ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams. These principles combined with core knowledge and specialist technical nursing skills ensure that graduates can retrieve and apply knowledge to meet the needs of diverse populations and function as professional registered nurses in a regional and global context. Units in this course may be offered in either internal or external mode of study. Not all units are offered in both modes. All students must attend and pass a one week Simulation Block for every year of full time equivalent study at Casuarina, Alice Springs or Sydney campuses of the University. Students must also complete clinical placement units. Clinical placement units are dependent upon availability of placements with approved health care providers. Whilst the University will endeavour to place students within the semester in which they are enrolled and as close to their semester address as possible, this cannot be guaranteed. It is a requirement of the course that students only attend clinical placements at the time and place approved by Charles Darwin University. Failure to accept an arranged placement will result in delayed progression and completion of this course. Criminal History Check: students must complete preclinical requirements prior to being deemed eligible for clinical practice. This includes evidence of immunisation, national police clearance and Ochre card or equivalent.
