Course Overview

A set of core modules will equip you with research and experimental skills in the sciences as well as an understanding of topics such as endocrinology, microbiology and inherited disorders. At the same time, you will choose from a variety of optional modules to focus on the topics that suit your own interests and career ambitions such as chemotherapy, bioinformatics, exercise physiology, immunology and drug development.Taught by expert researchers in our world-class facilities, you will gain a firm knowledge base across all the medical sciences and have access to the latest discoveries being made right here in Leeds. The Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Leeds has invested 2.25 million in modern, specialised teaching laboratories as well as fermentation units, research-quality microscopes and molecular biology suites. You will have access to a range of specialist scientific equipment and fantastic computing and library resources including the dedicated Health Sciences Library to help you develop your knowledge and skills in a stimulating and supportive environment. Visit the programme website for more information Study abroad and work placements Study abroad On this course you have the opportunity to apply to spend time abroad, usually as an extra academic year. The University has partnerships with more than 400 universities worldwide and popular destinations for our students include Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and Latin America. If you choose to undertake a study abroad option, you will spend the third year of the BSc studying abroad. This will extend your studies by 12 months. Work placements Practical work experience can help you decide on your career and improve your employability. On this course you have the option to apply to take a placement year module with organisations across the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK, or overseas. We have a dedicated Employability Officer in the Faculty of Biological Sciences who works closely with the University's Careers Centre. We offer a host of additional opportunities beyond core course content, including volunteering and placements. We also organise regular careers workshops designed specifically for sport sciences students to develop their career opportunities. These include our annual Bioscience Networking Event, which gives you the chance to meet bioscience employers, speak to alumni, attend workshops and get masses of information. Subjects

Programme Structure A set of compulsory modules in Year 1 will give you a grounding in the different disciplines within medical sciences, including anatomy, physiology and neuroscience. You will also develop the fundamental laboratory skills and techniques that will underpin the rest of your studies. In Year 2 you will study core modules that build on your knowledge with a focus on neurobiology, physiology of absorption and excretion and cardio-respiratory physiology, as well as developing your understanding of research methods and experimental skills. A wide range of optional modules will also allow you to tailor your studies to your interests, from human diseases to toxicology and bioinformatics. You will also choose one area to specialise in from pharmacology, neuroscience, physiology and medical sciences more broadly a pair of modules will allow you to study this area in greater depth and gain specific experimental skills. In your final year, you will select from research-based modules related to your preferences and interests, including cancer biology and biomedical nanotechnology. Much of the year will be focused on your own research project, on a completely original topic in the subject which will allow you to explore our latest research breakthroughs with leading academics.

Academic Entry Requirement

Academic Requirements A-level: AAA-AAB Including Biology/Human Biology, or Chemistry plus another science or science-related subject. Critical Thinking and General Studies excluded. We accept the following science subjects: biology, human biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Science- related subjects: geography, PE, psychology, use of maths and statistics. GCSE: Typically Grade B or above at GCSE Maths and Grade C or above at GCSE English. English language requirements IELTS 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 in any component
